sed in the typhoon season. Moreover the building was not such as would be designed by a professional architect of good taste, I therefore considered it advisable to secure the services of Messrs. Palmer and Turner, Local Architects, to prepare a new design, better arranged as to internal accommodation and of a more attractive appearance.
Mr. Palmer who undertook the work is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and the designer of many of the most important buildings in the Colony.
4. He furnished preliminary sketches which, with some modifications, met with my approval and has now completed the designs, photographs of which I forward herewith.
5. The plans show a building provided with enclosed verandahs on all exposed faces, containing the requisite reception rooms and offices, and seven bedrooms, besides one for European servants and a school-room.
6. Messrs. Palmer and Turner are now engaged in drawing up a specification on which tenders for the erection of the building can be called for. Prices of all building work, especially at the Peak, have considerably advanced within the past few years, but it is hoped by the Architects that a contractor can be secured to erect this building as designed for the amount already voted by the Legislative Council, namely $75,000.
